Do You Know Lloyd and Elsa Mathews?

Lloyd & Elsa Mathews

Lloyd & Elsa Mathews

Elsa and Lloyd Mathews have been living in downtown San Antonio for a little over a year, and they are frequently found at the La Frite Happy Hour on Thursday evenings. They are in the process of purchasing a loft at Judson Candy Factory and hope to be moved in soon. They split their time between San Antonio and Rockport, TX, where they maintain a vacation home.

Elsa is a native San Antonian and grew up in the near downtown area. She attended St. Michael’s Elementary School, which was located on South Street in what is now HemisFair Park. Elsa remembers the many small stores along her route to school on Hoefgen Avenue and Victoria Street (now César E. Chávez Boulevard, formerly Durango) that made the neighborhood fun and interesting. Among the places were Joe’s Butcher Shop, The New York Bakery, Double Dip Ice Cream, and Waitz Supermarket. She also attended Blessed Sacrament Academy and Our Lady of the Lake University.

Painting ranks high in Elsa’s interests; she spends much of her time in Rockport in her studio. You can check out some of her work on her website. Elsa is a member of the Texas Watercolor Society, San Antonio Art League and Museum, Rockport Center for the Arts, and BrushStrokes (a critique group of eleven women). Elsa will be displaying her work on August 12th at the Schaefer’s “Evening under the Stars” art party.

Lloyd grew up in Massachusetts and met Elsa while stationed at the Lackland Air Force base. Together they have lived in Massachusetts, Virginia, Texas and Arizona. Lloyd and Elsa raised three daughters and have four grandchildren — two girls and two boys.

You might call Lloyd the “Ultimate Entrepeneuer”. He keeps busy with three businesses involving medical equipment leasing, network cabling, and government contracting. Lloyd will be glad to discuss these at any Happy Hour!

Lloyd is an active member of Alamo Fly Fishers and fishing is number one on his relaxation list, followed closely by chatting with friends over a glass of wine and traveling to new places.
